Vietnam - Vietnam premier calls for corruption trials

Vietnam Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has urged relevant ministries and agencies to push investigations and court procedures into ongoing corruption-related cases for prosecution by the end of the year to ensure clear and strict law enforcement.

The Prime Minister made the request in Ha Noi on Tuesday while co-presiding over the 16th meeting of the Central Anti-Corruption Steering Committee to review anti-corruption activities in the first nine months of the year and set out tasks for the coming time.

He asked the Ministry of Public Security to report on corruption cases in the finance and banking sector and clamp down on those responsible.

Reviewing activities during the first three quarters of the year, Dung said that efforts had been increased in the fight against corruption, proven by the decreasing number of denunciation and complaints as well as the declining number of cases.

However, he noted that corruption activities had become more sophisticated and harder to discover. Meanwhile, investigations, prosecutions and other court procedures often took a long time, causing concerns and doubts about the strict enforcement of anti-corruption.

As a result, the PM asked all members of the anti-corruption committee to actively push the supervision, examination and support of relevant units, and synchronise measures to combat corruption.

The leader said that to ensure the effectiveness of State budget-invested projects, the Government would supervise the implementation and distribution of the State budget closely by clearly defining those who should take responsibility for their effectiveness.

He assigned the State Inspectorate to build a decree requiring the heads of agencies and units to be public and transparent in their activities, expenses and construction investment.

He also asked the Inspectorate to implement specialised inspections on land claims.

In the first nine months of the year, there were 161 cases relating to corruption with 327 people prosecuted, 2.4 per cent of cases and 2.3 per cent of accused less than the same period last year.
