Vietnam - Visiting hospitals, Health Minister feels deep grief

VietNamNet Bridge – After making a field trip to three big hospitals in HCM City on November 28, Minister of Health Nguyen Thi Kim Tien was heart-rending to see several patients lying on one bed and some had to lie down on the ground.

At the HCM City Tumor Hospital, patients lined from the early morning. At around 7am, the examination area was extremely crowded.

The hospital’s director, Le Hoang Minh, said that the hospital has only 600 beds but it has to serve over 1,800 patients. The hospital also examines around 1,600 patients a day on average.

Minh said the number of patients increases by 10 percent annually. Around 60-70 percent of the patients come from other provinces.

The situation at the HCM City Trauma and Orthopedics Hospital is not better. The hospital examines around 4,000 patients a day, so it is very normal to see three patients on a single bed.

In the last 26 years, the number of patients has increased by over four times, from 8,310 patients in 1985 to 33,882 by November 2011, but the hospital’s scale is the same, said the hospital’s director Tran Thanh My.

The overloaded situation at the Pediatrics Hospital 1 is more serious. The numbers of patients at some wards--like respiratory or emergency aid, always double the designed capacity.

The hospital also has to take care of more than 10,000 kids who wait for heart operations.

Notably, the number of patients from other provinces is very high, account for 40 percent of resident and 80 percent of non-resident patients.

The hospital’s director Tang Chi Thuong said that the hospital is now in shortage of doctors.

Minister Nguyen Thi Kim Tien said she felt grief to see several patients sharing a small bed and some have to lie on the ground.

Tien said that while land for hospitals is limited; land for golf courses and industrial zones is abundant. In this situation, problems associated with medical ethics and working attitude of health workers cannot be solved to the root, because health workers have to take care of huge numbers of patients.
