Phnom Penh (Rasmei
Kampuchea/ANN) - A 20-percent hike in Vietnam's domestic airfares this week
means that tours to central Vietnam by people living in Ho Chi Minh City now
cost about the same as tours to Cambodia, Tuoi Tre News reported.
The report said the hike in
airfares and local tour prices had led to a "ridiculous state where
domestic tours are more expensive than foreign ones.
The hike which takes effect
this week will negatively hurt the domestic tourism industry that is already
suffering from bad reputation with poor service, pollution, peddling, and
robberies," it added."Under the current price quotations, tourists
from Ho Chi Minh City will find it more expensive to have a holiday in the
north of Vietnam than in neighboring countries like Thailand, Singapore and
Malaysia, assuming similar service quality. For tours to Cambodia (Siem Reap -
Sihanoukville - Phnom Penh), it is roughly as costly as tours to central
Vietnam (Hue, Da Nang, Hoi An)."
The report added that some tour
operators had already stopped taking bookings for air tours to destinations in
southern Vietnam, notably the islands of Con Dao and Phu Quoc, which is located
near Kep in Cambodia.
Vietnam is already Cambodia's
largest source of tourist arrivals.
