Vietnam - Advertisements of international private preschools deceptive

Vietnam has of late seen a mushrooming of international private preschools and kindergartens’ charging exorbitant tuition fees, though in reality what they offer does not match what they advertise.

Around 50 international private preschools and kindergartens in Ho Chi Minh City are advertising through the local media.

One school said it taught kids using Montessori method of training, which is presently being applied in over 5,000 preschools in the US and Canada, while another preschool is advertising that it teaches English only to young students using a bi-lingual curriculum.

Students in international private preschools are taught drawing, painting, playing a musical instrument, English language and other extracurricular activities.

Accordingly, tuition fees are varied. They range from US$525-US$700 per month for an English curriculum and US$300-US$350 per month for a bi-lingual curriculum.

Despite high fees, some preschools are not equipped with good or adequate facilities, don’t have sufficiently large schoolyards for   students to play and crowd classes with more than 15 students. Often the quality of foreign teachers is not as good as advertised in newspapers.

Parents must therefore consider the learning environment, size of class, number of students in a class, types of meals offered and the quality of teachers before paying huge fees to educate their children in an international private preschool.
