Starting
this year, Macau will be home to a new airplane and the first head office in
South East Asia for Global Flying Hospitals (GFH).
Neill Newton, a pilot, author and now
international humanitarian, has been planning to set up an office in Macau for
the last five years.
Being based in the U.S., Mr Newton says he was
faced with high costs to fly across the ocean to reach the countries and people
that needed help.
“Macau is surrounded by developing countries,
which is good,” he says.
Similarly to Orbis, Global Flying Hospitals
will fly to third world countries to treat people who desperately need medical
attention.
In the five days GFH was in Nepal recently,
doctors performed 103 cataract surgeries.
Global Flying Hospitals has two Boeing 747s
and is acquiring capital for their refurbishment, which will cost between US$14
million (MOP112 million) and US$16 million.
Cooperation with Macau will see GFH offer
logistics for hospitals, staff and support.
The Global Flying Hospital and Sofitel Macau
yesterday signed an memorandum of understanding that will see the hotel provide
accommodation to the charity’s staff and doctors while they are in Macau.
With this agreement, Sofitel also aims to show
its corporate social responsibility of extending help to those in need in
developing countries.
