Integra LifeSciences, a township-based global supplier of
medical devices, has opened an Asia business office in Shanghai as it expands
into one of the world’s fastest developing medical device markets.
“China’s rapidly growing
economy has created a significant medical device market that presents Integra
with major growth opportunities,” said Integra CEO Stuart Essig. “This is an
important milestone for our company and a clear indication of the importance we
place in the area.”
Founded in 1989 with a focus on
developing products to regenerate patients’ skin, the company moved to
Plainsboro with fewer than 10 employees.
With offices in Utah,
Pennsylvania, California, Massachusetts and Ohio, Integra employs 3,000 and is
a leading provider of products designed for surgeons specializing in
neurosurgery, orthopedic, spine, reconstructive and general surgery.
The new office in Shanghai, the
company’s first in Asia, is located at the People’s Square area of the Huangpu
District.
The grand opening ceremony in
Shanghai was attended by governmental representatives, local media, Integra
employees and dignitaries from the Shanghai Food and Drug Administration.
Alan Eng will manage the new
office and serve as Integra’s Greater China General Manager. Eng has 30 years’
experience in China health care.
“With an initial staff of five,
we aim to establish a stronger distribution network to greatly enhance our
services to our customers in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan,” he said.
Integra LifeSciences Holdings
Corp. announced last week it expects fourth-quarter 2011 revenue to be
approximately $202 million to $203 million. The figures are about 3 percent
below the low end of estimates it previously issued.
The company said the revenue
shortfall resulted from inventory reduction initiatives by its instruments
distributors, weakness outside of the U.S., and weaker than expected sales of
its domestic Extremity Reconstruction products.
Integra offers a broad
selection of implants, devices, instruments and systems utilized in
neurosurgery, neuromonitoring, neurotrauma and other critical care.
Its orthopedic products include
implants and devices for the foot, ankle, hand, wrist, shoulder, elbow and
spine.
