Malaysia - Chinese-owned businesses to re-open by Wednesday

Petaling Jaya (The Star/ANN) - The official Chinese New Year holidays may be over but most businesses operated by the community will only re-open by Wednesday.

Checks at various locations here and in Kuala Lumpur found that most shops were closed.

These were mainly tyre and car workshops, electrical items dealers and restaurant chains.

"I need the longer break as my workers have returned to their hometowns. It is also an opportunity for me to have a longer rest,'' said an air-conditioner service technician who only wished to be known as Peng.

Judy Tam, 31, who owns an events management company, said her company would also be closed until Wednesday.

"Closing for more than a week does not really affect us as most of our clients are Chinese and will not be needing our service during this period,'' she added.

There were more closed signs than open doors at a row of shophouses along Jalan Genting Klang.

"I need the extra days for a holiday with my family,'' said an assistant at Kim Heng Tayar in Sunway.

Meanwhile, several businesses are re-opening early to cash in on the festive period.

Popular seafood joint Fatty Crab in Taman Megah will re-open today after giving its workers a one-week break.

May Tan, 23, owner of online apparel store www.PhatCulture.com said her site was only closed on Monday and Tuesday.

"Business has been slower the whole week as most of our customers have made their purchases before Chinese New Year," said the entrepreneur.
