Burma’s National League for Democracy (NLD) began its
process of reform on Monday. The Central Executive Committee of the NLD
nominated Aung San Suu Kyi as the Chairperson.
Former senior members Nyan Win,
Ohn Kyaing, Han Thar Myint, Tun Tun Hein, Win Myint and May Win Myint have been
nominated as members of the reformed central executive committee.
The party also formed a
‘Committee of Patrons’ which chose Tin Oo as its chairman. Former senior
leaders Win Tin, Than Tun, Nyunt Wai and Hla Pe have been selected as members
of the reformed patron committee.
According to spokesman Nyan
Win, NLD needs to submit an organizational formation of the party in accordance
with the political party registration law as soon as it registered the party.
The NLD was originally formed on September 27, 1988, but it could not have a
chance to hold respective party conferences including a national seminar due to
the prohibitions of the previous military regime.
NLD leader Aung San Suu Kyi
together with U Tin Oo, U Nyan Win, U Han Thar Myint and Dr. Nge Nge left
Rangoon for Naypyitaw on December 23 visiting Union Election Commission and
carried out registration process of her political party. Suu Kyi and her
associates met with UEC Chairman U Tin Aye and seven commission members, namely
U Myint Naing, U Aung Myint, U Thar Oo, Dr. Daw Myint Kyi, U Win Kyi, U Nyunt
Tin and U Win Ko.
The NLD has already declared to
contest all 48 vacant parliamentary seats, including four seats in capital
Naypyitaw which is the stronghold of the military-backed government’s party.
The by-elections will be held on April 1
and will be managed by the UEC.
Countless democracy supporters
in the country and members of the National League for Democracy support the
idea of re-entering the NLD to play in the national politics. In its November
18 statement, the party said the “NLD has unanimously decided to re-register as
a political party… and will run in the elections”.
The chairman of Burma’s Union
Election Commission (EC), Tin Aye, has promised pro-democracy leader Aung San
Suu Kyi that he will make sure the imminent by-elections are free and fair, and
that the government was committed to work together with the opposition for the
interests of the country.
Dr. Zaw Myint Maung, a former
MP and political prisoner, who is a member of Mandalay Division NLD canvassing
committee said that the NLD delegate discussed campaign for the by-elections on
Monday to select possible candidates. Priority will be given to those who have
worked hard supporting democracy with a good educational background. Ethnic, female and youths members will be the
most favorable, he added.
Currently, respective NLD
canvassing committees in various states and divisions are busy with selection
of candidates.
The NLD will bring out the
party publication, called D-Wave Journal, on January 16. Former famous
Hanthawaddy Daily’s editor-in-chief and senior leader Win Tin becomes in charge
of the D-Wave Journal. Win Tin said the journal will take in articles by
foreign and local columnists including news stories and information around the
world. It will also cover the respective policies of the NLD together with its
activities. Aung San Suu Kyi’s articles and political outlooks will also appear
in the publication.
Aung San Suu Kyi has already
decided to stand in the polls and will play her part in current parliamentary
politics. Her priorities are to release all political prisoners, to stop the
civil war and to amend the undemocratic clauses in the 2008 constitution.
