Vietnam - Half a million dong for a seat to watch fireworks in Hanoi

VietNamNet Bridge – The cost of a seat for watching fireworks on the Lunar New Year’s Eve is 500,000 dong, which is twice as expensive the last year’s level. However, a lot of people are still rich enough to book the seats at the restaurants around the Hoan Kiem Lake.

An officer of the Long Van Thuy Ta lakeside restaurant said that the most advantageous seats which allow to have the best view of the lake and the fireworks were booked two weeks ago. She said that there are 20 seats in the open air area, while only two seats had remained unoccupied by January 9. Meanwhile, the fifth floor of the indoors area with 100 seats have also been nearly full.

“The ticket is 500,000 dong for a seat, more expensive than the last year’s level of 300,000-350,000 dong. However, we still have a lot of bookings,” she said.

Meanwhile, the other restaurants charge lower for a seat here than the previous years. An officer of City View Café said that the restaurant will only begin selling tickets for the seats from January 16, or one week before Tet. Each ticket costs 250,000 dong, lower than the previous year’s level of 400,000 dong.

“We have about 200 seats, and those, who make reservation soon, would get the best positions,” she said.

When asked why the ticket is cheaper than the last year despite the high inflation, she said that the tickets depend on the associated drinks and meals. In 2011, the restaurant charged high on tickets because the associated meals were special dishes.

“However, we have realized that this is not the best way. In general, people have dinner at home before going out on the New Year’s Eve. Therefore, we would not serve special meals this year, but only light meals and drinks,” she said.

Meanwhile, some other restaurants on the Hoan Kiem Lake area said that they would not sell the tickets for the seats for watching fireworks. The clients, who order meals or coffee, would still be served as usual, while they would still be able to choose the seats with the best view.

While a lot of people said they would be ready to pay 500,000 dong to buy a ticket, many others say this is really a waste of money. Khanh, who has been living in Hanoi for the last 30 years, said that watching fireworks at the lakeside restaurants would be very romantic for couples, but it would be very costly for big families which have to pay several million dong.

Meanwhile, Nga, an office worker, said that she would be better to hustle in the midst of a press to welcome the New Year than sitting at a restaurant, because “only when you are a part of the crowd, you will better feel the atmosphere of the new year.”

Thang, the owner of a café on the Hoan Kiem lake area, said that he will also sell the seats for watching fireworks on the New Year’s Eve. He also said that most of his clients were young people and foreigners.

“Lovers like sipping coffee and watching the fireworks on the first minutes of the New Year. It is really wonderful and romantic to spend time together on the New Year’s Eve, give wishes and gifts,” he said.

Thang also said that expats in Vietnam also feel enjoyable with the fireworks on the New Year’s Eve.
