Vietnam - Prime Minister criticizes chairs of seven provinces

VietNamNet Bridge – Chairs cum chiefs of Traffic Safety Steering Boards of seven provinces have been criticized by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, for the increase of traffic accidents and victims of traffic accidents in 2010 and 2011 in their provinces.

The seven provinces which their chairs were criticized include Cao Bang, Binh Phuoc, Binh Thuan, Gia Lai, Long An, Phu Yen and Tay Ninh.

The PM asked these provinces’ Traffic Safety Steering Boards to review and learn from experience in ensuring traffic safety.

The PM, at the same time, commended ten provinces which have the numbers of traffic accident victims reduced in 2010 and 2011, including Hanoi, Hai Duong, Ha Nam, Lao Cai, Phu Tho, Nghe An, Dak Nong, Dak Lak, Quang Binh and HCM City.

He urged local Traffic Safety Steering Boards to try their best to achieve the target of reducing the number of traffic accidents and the number of victims by 5-10 percent and reducing gridlocks in big cities by 20 percent in 2012.

Under the current regulations, chairs of provinces and cities are also the heads of Traffic Safety Steering Board.

In the recent National Assembly session, deputy le Thi Nga, Vice chair of the National Assembly’s Committee for Justice, said that more than 150,000 Vietnamese died in traffic accidents recently but no official had been punished and no minister had been dismissed for this.

In a report to the National Assembly, Minister of Transport Dinh La Thang said that nearly 12,000 Vietnamese were killed in traffic accidents and 9,300 others were injured each year. The number of dead victims is equivalent to 75 percent and the number of wounded victims is equivalent to 150 percent of the victims of Japan’s earthquakes and tsunamis.
