Vietnam - Vietnam's image not popular on int'l media

VietNamNet Bridge – A report by Media Tenor 2011, an international media company, on Vietnam’s image on international television channels, shows that Vietnam has to exert effort to be mentioned by the international media.

Vietnam’s image appeared at low frequency but it was quite balanced, according to Media Tenor’s comment, based on analysis of nearly 58,000 world bulletins on 21 leading TV channels in the US (ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, CNN), the UK (BBC, ITV), France (TF1), Germany (ARD, RTL, ZDF), Spain (TVE1), Switzerland (SF), Italy (RAI 1) and China (CCTV).

In the first half of 2011, Vietnam appeared only 44 times, including ten on BBC and 12 on CCTV.

Media Tenor confirms that the theory on geographic and racial closeness is not clearly proven when China’s CCTV reported about Vietnam as the same as Britain’s BBC. Meanwhile, news about Vietnam was absent from France and Italy’s world news bulletins.

The attitude towards Vietnam on CCTV was balance between positive and negative while up to 80 percent of news about Vietnam on American channels were positive.

According to Media Tenor, Vietnam did not appear often on international TV channels. There was no piece of news about Vietnam in March, July and August. News about Vietnam was written based on viewpoints of foreign TV stations.

Notably, up to 32.4 percent of the news was about Vietnam’s foreign relations while business news accounted for just six percent. News about accidents made up 27 percent. History, particularly the Vietnam War, was still a popular topic.

Journalists had more positive views about Vietnam when they reported about Vietnam’s development. However, Vietnam’s appearance on the world media was still too low so the country’s image would be easily affected if any scandal happens, Media Tenor concluded.
