Vietnam - With too many home exercises, students will have “working Tet holiday”

VietNamNet Bridge – Vietnamese students expect a longer Tet holiday this year. However, this does mean that they would have much time to relax, because they have more home exercises for longer Tet holiday.

Nam Anh, a student of the NT Primary School in Hanoi, frowned to his mother right after getting home. “I have so many home exercises to do this Tet,” he told the mother.

The boy opened his school bag and showed the mother the exercises, mostly in mathematics and Vietnamese language. “He has to do tens of mathematics questions in the textbooks, and other tens of exercises in Vietnamese language. Besides, there are also some exercises relating to Vietnamese grammar,” said Hang, the mother of Nam Anh.

A lot of students have complained that they would have to work hard on Tet holiday to deal with the “mount” of exercises the teachers ask them to do. All Vietnamese teachers give home exercises to their students on holidays, because they believe that this is the best way to keep the students busy. By doing exercises, students would not neglect their studies and not forget their knowledge.

“I know that too many exercises on Tet holiday would frighten students, because children only want to go out on Tet instead of staying at home doing exercises,” Hang said.

“Therefore, I will only ask him to do the exercises given by the teacher, while I will not ask him to do extra works, so that he can have time to relax,” Hang said.

However, while the duties seem to be more flexible for primary school students, secondary and high school students would have to face heavy punishment, if they do not fulfill the tasks. Pham Minh Duc, a 9th grader of the TH Secondary School in Hanoi said that he and his classmates have been busy working home exercises for the last week. They have been trying to do the home exercises before Tet, so that they can have more time for Tet holiday.

Duc said that he has 15 exercises in physics, 15 exercises in chemistry, and 12 difficult mathematics questions. Besides, he expects to have more exercises in English, literature and history in some more days.

“I feel too tired of doing exercises. But if I don’t fulfill the task, I will have to face heavy punishment,” Duc said.

Especially, he said that in order to do exercises, it is necessary to read a lot of books. For example, in order to do English exercises, he will have to read other reference books to practice topics more and to learn more about grammar.

A student of a foreign language majoring school has complained that she has too many English exercises this Tet holiday. “Meanwhile, English is not the only subject. We have a lot of other subjects and a lot of other exercises,” she said.

Working Tet home exercises has become the fear of many students. Meanwhile, parents cannot do anything to help their children. A parent said he has advised the child to do Tet exercises right now to have more relax time on Tet days. Meanwhile, parents have to take on all the housework these days, doing the house cleaning and decoration, preparing for Tet celebration themselves, without the help of the child, because he is busy doing exercises.

Bich Huong, a housewife in Dong Anh district, complained that she has to learn with the son until 9 pm every day. “The exercises have not only frightened students, but parents as well,” she said.
