Brunei - World leaders greet HM



GREETINGS from heads of state and foreign dignitaries from around the globe poured in for His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam on the occasion of Brunei's 28th National Day today.

The United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said in a statement issued by the Department of State, "On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I am delighted to send wishes and congratulations to the people of Brunei Darussalam as you celebrate your 28th National Day this February 23."

"Today, our two countries are working closely together with a robust bilateral and regional agenda to tackle some of our most pressing issues. We have partnered to increase English language instruction in ASEAN, promote commercial interests, and expand educational opportunities and people-to-people connections," she said.

Meanwhile in another message, Singapore President Tony Tan extended his heartfelt congratulations to His Majesty and the people of Brunei.

"The 28th National Day of Brunei is an opportunity for all Bruneians to celebrate the significant achievements of the country. Brunei is widely admired within the international community as a peaceful and prosperous nation," the president said.

The island-state's president also commented that Brunei and Singapore enjoy a deep and enduring relationship, marked by excellent bilateral and regional cooperation.

In another message, Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and his government extended their warmest congratulations to His Majesty and the government on the occasion of the National Day.

The prime minister said under His Majesty's wise and enlightened leadership, the people of Brunei enjoy a high standard of living and strong economic growth, while remaining united by the traditions and values of Bruneian society.

Singapore's Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Law K Shanmugam also extended his warmest congratulations to His Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade in ushering National Day.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev also congratulated His Majesty on the occasion of the National Day.

In his message, he noted his appreciation over the progressive development of friendly Russia-Brunei relations within the framework of agreements reached during His Majesty's visit to Moscow in October 2009.

"I am looking forward that cooperation between our countries in trade, economic, scientific, technological and humanitarian spheres will be further expanded as well as our interaction in the international arena will contribute to strengthening peace and security in the Asia-Pacific region," he said.

Kuwait ambassador to Brunei Ghassan M Al-Duwaisan also congratulated His Majesty on National Day.

"May Allah save our two beloved countries and our honourable peoples, to celebrate our national days ever after with plenty of prosperity and peace. May Allah help us to achieve our aims and bless our efforts for the benefit of our nations," he said in a message.
