Indonesia
is seeking to return toxic waste to the countries it originated from after 113
shipping containers seized recently at a Jakarta port were confirmed to contain
hazardous materials.
The State Ministry of the Environment
announced in Jakarta on Tuesday that the material imported by Hwang Hook Steel
(HHS) was proven to contain alarming levels of hazardous materials, including
arsenic, lead, sulfide and chromium.
When seized at Tanjung Priok Port in North
Jakarta in late January, waste scrap metal, asphalt and liquid waste was found
inside the containers.
Sudariyono, deputy for environmental
compliance at the ministry, said investigators had summoned four witnesses from
HHS in relation to the findings, although only two had responded.
He said there was an indication that the
importation of the material was intentional, therefore legal proceedings were
underway.
The ministry is also now preparing documents
to re-send the toxic waste to where they came from, namely Britain and the
Netherlands.
