Malaysia - 2 deaths among 2,200 gastroenteritis cases in Perak

TAPAH, MALAYSIA: Over 2,200 cases of acute gastroenteritis, including two deaths, have been reported in the Batang Padang and Hilir Perak districts since two weeks ago.

State Health Committee chairman Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon said almost half of the patients were children aged 12 and below.

They were from Bidor, Hutan Melintang, Teluk Intan, Chenderong Balai, Langkap and here.

"In Hilir Perak, two infants, aged two and 10 months, have died due to dehydration after getting sick.

"The infants were not brought to any government hospitals or clinics for immediate treatment," Datuk Mah told reporters at the Tapah health clinic.

Contaminated food and water could be the causes

Since January 27, 2,236 acute gastroenteritis cases had been recorded in the two districts with Hilir Perak having 1,397 cases, and Batang Padang, 839, he said.

He said the viral attack, which caused the food poisoning was believed to be water-borne and from contaminated food.

The state Health Department is carrying out an investigation, together with the Medical Research Institute and National Public Health Laboratory.

Although the number of cases have dropped since last week, Datuk Mah advised people to take precautionary measures to prevent further spread of the virus.

Like boiling drinking water, washing hands with soap before and after meals, before preparing food and after going to the toilet.

He urged those experiencing symptoms such as fever, diarrhoea, vomiting, nausea, stomach ache, and headache and loss of appetite to seek treatment immediately at the nearest clinic or hospital.
