SINGAPORE - Counterfeit certificates of
well-known private schools in Singapore are being sold online, reported a local
news source.
Sellers even claim to be able to provide
certificates for any course, together with supporting documents such as
transcripts reflecting good performance.
However, this all comes at a high price with
some certificates going for as much as $10,000.
The advertisements posted in one online
Chinese forum claims to be able to help students who fear they might not
graduate produce certificates of good grades.
Apparently, certificates from the Management
Development Institute of Singapore (MDIS) and its university affiliates are
available on the black market. MDIS, however, is not aware of it.
The institution said it will conduct checks
and inform the police of any developments.
The Council for Private Education said it will
look into this issue and take action, if needed.
Apparently, business management or tourism
courses are the most sought after.
According to the report, one seller even
claimed that some students have found jobs using these certificates.
Human resource firms believe that it is not
difficult to spot a fake certificate as long as hirers are diligent to check.
A few ways to verify include cross-referencing
with the original degree and conducting background checks on the job applicant.
