SINGAPORE: Rehabilitation medicine will play a greater role in Singapore with the ageing population and increasing prevalence of chronic conditions such as stroke, hip fracture, heart failure, and traumatic brain or spinal cord injury.
Speaking at the first national conference on rehabilitation, Minister of State for Health Amy Khor said rehabilitation plays a critical role in improving the functional outcomes and the quality of life of affected patients.
Rehabilitation helps to reduce patients' dependence and enables their re-integration into the community.
So it is timely that two hospitals here have organised the first national conference on rehabilitation for healthcare professionals to learn more about advances in rehabilitation medicine.
Dr Khor said 31 rehabilitation centres have been accredited for having met the new service requirements introduced last year.
Centres that meet the service requirements -- in terms of staffing, needs assessment, individualised care plans and monitoring of outcomes -- receive higher government subsidies.
They will also be allowed the use of Medisave for community rehabilitation services.
Dr Khor said the Agency for Integrated Care (AIC) is working to get more centres to qualify for accreditation.
Dr Khor added the Ministry of Health is working with two more providers to set up Transitional Care Facility (TFC). The first TFC that is being piloted is within Peacehaven Nursing Home.
TFCs are for patients who require slower-stream, lower-intensity rehabilitation after their discharge from acute or community hospitals before they can return home.
The conference brings together expert speakers from the ministries, government agencies, acute and community hospitals and authorities in rehabilitation engineering and technologies.
Singapore General Hospital's head and senior consultant at the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine Ng Yee Sien explained there has been an exponential growth in rehabilitation research including health services, medication and engineering over the last 20 years.
Some of the breakthroughs in rehabilitation include trials in virtual reality and interactive media, the use of sensors, weight-support devices, and robots for gait training.
Tan Tock Seng Hospital's head and senior consultant at the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine Chan Kay Fei said by bringing the experts together, stakeholders will be able to implement paradigm shifts for the benefit of patients with disabilities.
Five hundred professionals are attending the two-day conference.
