Singapore - Singapore, European Commission to enhance transport ties

Singapore has signed three agreements with the European Commission (EC) to enhance bilateral relations in the transport sector.

Minister for Transport and Second Minister for Foreign Affairs Lui Tuck Yew and Vice-President of the European Commission and Commissioner for Transport Mr Siim Kallas signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the EC and Singapore on co-operation in intelligent transport systems (ITS).

Both sides will be able to cooperate in ITS in urban transport, such as developing and assessing ITS technologies and solutions in urban transport systems, ITS training programmes, and policy formulation towards sustainable urban mobility involving ITS.

The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) also signed an MOU on aviation safety co-operation.

The areas of co-operation include civil aviation training, sharing of information, and research.

Mr Kallas and Minister Lui also witnessed the signing of a Letter of Intent between the Single European Sky Air Traffic Management (ATM) Research Joint Undertaking (SESAR JU) and the CAAS to explore ways to co-operate on air traffic management issues.

Both sides will work on joint projects such as harmonisation of standards, and other areas of collaboration related to air traffic management.

Mr Siim Kallas said transport is an example of where more can be done.

"We can all gain from working together, and by making best use of Europe's investment, its specialised technical expertise, skill in innovation and transport manufacturing capability."

Minister Lui Tuck Yew said the signing of these agreements shows that there is greater scope for co-operation in the transport sector between the EC and Singapore.

"We can build on our common interest in enhancing the transport links between Europe and Asia to facilitate business interactions, trade, tourism, and economic growth.

"I am confident that the agreements signed today will deepen our bilateral exchanges, and help address common challenges ahead in the transport arena," he said.
