Vietnam - Patient overloading must be eliminated: PM

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has urged health authorities to take urgent action to reduce and prevent patient overloading at hospitals, which affects treatment quality and inconveniences patients.

Speaking at yesterday’s conference held by the Health Ministry to review public health care performance in 2011 and discuss tasks for this year, the PM requested health authorities and hospitals, especially large specialty hospitals in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh city, seek ways to put an end to situations in which patients have to share sickbeds or lie in hospital corridors.

On the occasion of the Vietnamese Physician’s Day (February 27), however, he also commended achievements gained by the heath sector in the past 57 years.

Since its establishment in 1954, the sector has developed from a workforce of just 300 to 200,000 and increased the number of hospitals to 13,500, from which diverse examination and treatment services have been provided to the public.

In spite of these gains, patient overloading at hospitals at central and provincial levels remains a big problem, and has resulted in treatment of a quality that has yet to meet patients’ expectations.

Meanwhile, the country has been facing many epidemics, including bird flu, hand, foot and mouth disease, and dengue fever.

To fix the problem, the PM asked health authorities to expand the hospital systems rapidly, improve management and financial mechanisms, enhance examination and treatment quality, and provide health insurance for the entire population by 2014.

The heath authorities should also ensure the provision of examination and treatment services for poor people, the PM said.

He said local authorities should encourage investors to take part in building hospitals and give them favorable conditions under which to develop their projects.

Health Minister Nguyen Thi Kim Tien said efforts would be made to combat the epidemics, ease patient overloading, renovate financial mechanisms, expand the public health system, strengthen medical personnel, boost healthcare education, and plot the model of treatment on demand.

She also reported that the prices of about 520 of the 4,000 health services will be increased in April 2012, in an effort to cover increased operating costs and increase treatment quality.
