Vietnam - PM calls for better protection of worker’s legitimate interests

VietNamNet Bridge – The Vietnam General Confederation of Labour (VGCL) and trade unions at all levels should work together more closely on providing better care for workers’ lives and protecting their legitimate interests, said Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung.

During his working session with the VGCL on February 22, PM Dung praised the confederation and other trade unions’ efforts to coordinate with administrations to deal with strikes legally, step up the dissemination of legal information, prevent social evils, ensure traffic safety and effectively carry out emulation campaigns, thus contributing to the country’s socio-economic development.
PM Dung said that this year, the government and the VGCL need to take coordinated action in all fields, especially in the law-making process and in developing worker-related policies to better care for their lives and resolve strikes in a more effective manner, with a target of reducing strikes by 50 percent in 2012.
It is essential for the VGCL and trade unions to supervise the implementation of labour and trade laws in order to quickly detect violations and address tension to ensure harmonious and stable labour relationships, the Government leader said.
He also asked the VGCL to expand charity programmes, calling on the people to support the Fishing Trade Union and build a mechanism for protecting worker interests in association with the protection of national sovereignty.
PM Dung and leaders from central ministries and sectors also considered and gave opinions on the VGCL’s proposals on housing problems for workers, the implementation of the principle of centralised democracy, collective labour agreements and other issues related to mechanisms and polices for workers and trade organizations.
