THE Ministry of
Health (MoH) has identified five slimming products available on the market as
public health risks.
The ministry's Food Quality Control and Safety Division, Department of
Health recently took the products off the shelves as they contain
'Sibutramine', an ingredient that is prohibited under the Public Health (Food)
Regulations.
'Sibutramine' is a substance responsible for weight loss, and prolonged
consumption can lead to high blood pressure, hypertension and insomnia, the MoH
said in a public notice yesterday. As a food ingredient, 'Sibutramine' could be
hazardous to health, the press statement added.
The notice provided by the Ministry of Health listed down the five
products namely ;
Slimax Café - Premix Coffee with Garcinia Cambogia and White Kidney
Bean For Slimming;
Leisure 18 Pure Black Coffee;
Rest Slimm - Mango Drink;
Slimming Orange Juice Supplement Vitamins Enhance Immunity and;
Fashion Slimming Orange Juice.
The ministry's Food Quality Control and Safety Division, Department of
Health recently conducted inspections of supermarkets and found that the
products were sold without their approval.
Samples of the products, according to the statement, were sent to the
ministry's Scientific Laboratory for testing with results of the tests
confirming the presence of 'Sibutramine'.
In view of this recent discovery, the MoH has also issued its advisory
notice on the product to warn the public, especially those who have recently
purchased the items, to seize consumption of the said products, return the
purchased products to their suppliers and retailers,submit them to the Food
Quality Control and Safety Division, Department of Health or to District Health
Offices to be destroyed.
The advisory is also calling on importers and traders to withdraw these
products from the market and to submit them to the relevant agencies for proper
disposal.
The public is also advised against falling prey to weight reducing food
products whose safety is not guaranteed and may contain ingredients which are
harmful to health.
According to the ministry, those who produce, sell or import food that
can be harmful to health face a possible five year prison term and/or fine upon
conviction.
