Indonesia's
Transportation Ministry announced on Wednesday that the tender process for
Jakarta’s mass rapid transit (MRT) project had been opened and that the first
phase of the project would be commence operations by 2016.
Tundjung Inderawan, director general for railways at the ministry, said
the construction was expected to commence in the middle of the year, as the
Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), which has agreed to fund the
project, had approved 10 contractors in the pre-qualification stage.
Then they are scheduled to offer prices in June or July, after which
the winner will be chosen and the construction can finally begin.
“This year we will start the construction, so that by mid or end of
2016 Indonesia will have an MRT,” Tundjung said in Jakarta on Wednesday.
The first MRT will span 15.5 kilometers, connecting Lebak Bulus in
South Jakarta to the Hotel Indonesia Traffic Circle in Central Jakarta. It will
have seven flyovers and six subway stations.
