President Susilo
Bambang Yudhoyono received letters of credentials on Friday from 15 new foreign
ambassadors in a ceremony at the Merdeka Palace that marked the beginning of
their tenures.
Among the 15 new envoys, only two are based in Jakarta, namely Bertrand
Lortholary of France and Liu Jianchao of China. The remaining 13 are based in
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; Tokyo, Japan; Singapore; New Delhi, India; and Bangkok,
Thailand.
“Our ties are strong and in good shape. I hope during your tenures you
can help boost our good relationships,” President Yudhoyono said in the
ceremony.
Liu, a former spokesperson for China’s foreign ministry and China’s
ambassador to the Philippines from 2008 to 2011, arrived in Jakarta on
Wednesday. Liu’s appointment came just ahead of President Yudhoyono’s state
visit to China later this month.
Liu replaced Zhang Qiyue, also a former spokesperson for China’s
foreign ministry.
Liu is expected to establish a Chinese cultural center in Jakarta to
raise Indonesians’ awareness of the world’s most populous nation.
