Laos - HCMC People' s Council leads delegation to Laos

(KPL) A delegation of the Ho Chi Minh City People' s Council led by Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Quyet Tam arrived in the southwestern province of Champasak in Laos on March 5 for a three-day visit.

The visit to Laos by Comrade Tam is within the framework of a series of activities celebrating 2012 as the "Year of Vietnam-Laos Solidarity and Friendship".

In the afternoon, Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Quyet Tam held talks with Sonexay Siphandone, Party Secretary cum Governor of Champasak Province.

The Lao leader applauded the Vietnamese delegation' s visit, saying it would help bring the traditional friendship, special solidarity and comprehensive co-operation between Vietnam and Laos to a new level.

Comrade Sonexay Siphandone appreciated the visit of the Vietnamese delegation, describing it as an important political event to further deepen the friendly relations between HCMC and Champasak.

He expressed his hope that the two provinces would co-operate comprehensively in a range of areas and HCMC business circles would step up investments in Champasak in particular and in Laos in general.

Vietnamese investment in Laos had not been affected by the global credit crunch, and the total registered investment by Vietnamese enterprises in Laos reached US$480 million last year, surpassing the 2010 figure.

Vietnamese enterprises have poured more than $3.4 billion into projects so far, most of which are located in central and southern Laos.

Speaking at the meeting held in Champasak, Comrade Tam said HCMC' s investment will help the local economy. She said "HCMC will unceasingly offer economic, cultural, educational and commercial development and cooperation to Champasak".

She thanked the local authorities as well as Lao Government for creating favourable conditions for Vietnamese enterprises to effectively invest in their country. The two sides made a commitment to give every priority to consolidating and strengthening that relationship, considering it an invaluable asset that should be preserved and passed to future generations.

Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Quyet Tam also attended the ceremony to mark "Vietnam Cultural Week" in Champasak with some colourful art and culture activities.

During the three day visit, the delegation is expected to visit the Vietnamese Embassy in Laos, the Lao capital Vientiane and Vietnam Association in Laos and pay a courtesy visit to Lao National Assembly Chairman Pany Yathortu.
