(KPL) The World Bank and the Japanese
Government have provided US$ 11.3 million for development and integrated
management of disaster risk projects in central province Khammouane.
Signing ceremony for the grant assistance was
held at the Ministry of Finance on 29 February between Deputy Minister of
Finance Mrs. Viengthong Siphandone and World Bank Country Manager to Laos Mrs.
Keiko Miwa and was witnessed by Khammouane Governor Mr. Khambay Damlath, Deputy
Minister of Planning and Investment, representatives from the Japanese Embassy
in Laos, line ministries and relevant organisations.
The grant is the contribution between the
World Bank (US$ 8.6 million) and Japanese government (USD2.71 million). It will
be spent on the establishment of City Development Fund in Khammouane, the
restoration of basic infrastructure affected from flood, and capacity building
on the solution of natural disaster impacts, which has been implemented since
2008.
The fund will be also spent on institutional
strengthening, planning capacity, the monitoring of natural disaster risk
management by officials, at both central and local levels, of Planning and
Investment sectors, and agriculture and forestry sector.
On this occasion, Mrs. Viengthong representing
the Lao Government and Ministry of Finance and the beneficiary province
expressed thanks to the Japanese Government and the World Bank.
The Deputy Minister said that such assistance
contributed to the government effort in fulfilling its socio-economic
development plan and the UN millennium development goals (MDGs) by 2015 and
graduation of the Lao PDR from the list of least developed countries by 2020.
