Malaysia - It’s an uphill task, but teens don’t mind doing it for charity

PETALING JAYA: Two teenagers from the Shelter Home for Children will climb Mount Kinabalu to raise funds and awareness on the home and about child protection efforts.

N. Regina, 17, and Seow Kok Weng, 14, said that the home had provided them with care and protection since they were young.

Now, they want to give something back.

The “Shelter Home Mount Kinabalu - A Climb of Hope” would be held from April 25 to 28, in which the two would attempt to trek up the mountain with about 30 others.

They would also speak to people about the needs of children from broken homes.

Regina, who is active in sports, said she was excited about the programme.

She said she had her schooling interrupted when her father died. Faced with financial difficulty, her mother sent her to the home when she was 11. “Since then, I have been able to attend school.”

Seow said he wanted to raise RM15,000 for the Shelter Home.

“I don't know how I can do it, but I will try.”

Seow was sent to the home when he was seven, adding that the home had helped him with his studies.

“I am happy here as I feel protected,” said the teenager who likes to play basketball, badminton and futsal.

Meanwhile, home coordinator Edwin Jalleh said they hoped to raise RM100,000 this year for Shelter Home children's education.

“We are looking for sponsors for Regina and Seow and another 10 to join in the climb,” he said, adding that 20 volunteers had pledged to take part so far.

He said Regina and Seow would start their training by climbing Bukit Gasing, Batu Caves as well as Gunung Angsi in Seremban.
