THE
Department of Health on Thursday reported that at least 23 people died due to
dengue between January 1 and February 4 this year.
According to the agency’s monthly surveillance
report, there were 4,753 dengue cases that were recorded in different sentinel
hospitals nationwide during the period.
It noted, however, that the cases were
actually 60.54 percent lower compared to the same period last year, when the
department recorded 12,044 cases.
The health department said that most of the
cases were from Region 3 (1,572 cases or 33.07 percent of the total victims),
National Capital Region (1,018 or 21.42 percent) and Region 4-A (779 or 16.39
percent) with an age group of 11 to 20.
It added that most of the deaths came from
Regions 2 (Cagayan Valley), 6 (Western Visayas) and Region 8 (CARAGA).
The agency attributed the dengue cases to the
floods brought about by recent typhoons.
Moreover, the health department said that in
Metro Manila the cities of Calookan, Manila and Quezon top the places with most
number of dengue victims.
It said that to avoid the spread of dengue,
the public must continue to maintain clean surroundings by ensuring that all
possible mosquito breeding sites are destroyed or discarded such as empty
softdrink bottles, bamboo husks, old tires and flower vases.
Also, the department advised the public,
particularly those suspected of having dengue, to seek immediate medical
consultation for proper case management.
Some of the signs and symptoms of dengue are
high continuous fever lasting for two to seven days, nausea/vomiting, abdominal
pain, body weakness, bleeding from nose and gums and persistent red spots on
the face, extremities and trunks.
