MANILA,
Philippines – Former President Gloria
Macapagal Arroyo’s lawyer has posted a P70,000 bail at the Sandiganbayan Fourth
Division on behalf of the Pampanga lawmaker, who is facing graft charges over
the National Broadband Network (NBN)-ZTE project.
Atty.
Laurence Hector Arroyo paid the former President’s bail bond in cash, according
to Sandiganbayan sources.
His
client was charged for 2 counts of graft and for violation of Republic Aact
6713, or the Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials and
Employees, over the $329-million ZTE-NBN deal.
The
former President, who is under hospital arrest over a separate case for alleged
elecoral sabotage, is accused of using
her position to railroad the ZTE-NBN project, which was later scrapped over
allegations of irregularities.
Her
husband Jose Miguel Arroyo, former Transportation Secretary Leandro Mendoza and
former Commission on Elections chairman Benjamin Abalos Sr. are her
co-defendants in the case.
The
Sandiganbayan earlier allowed Arroyo to post bail without having to appear in
court.
She is
currently detained at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center.
The
court said having Arroyo undergo bail process at the hospital will save money
for the government and will pose less security risks.
