Former foreign minister George Yeo said
Saturday that many Singaporeans had "lost faith in the Government".
He also urged locals to work together for the interests of the country.
Speaking
at a Punggol Community Club dinner on Saturday night, he urged Singaporeans of
all political stripes to work together, saying Singapore had been divided since
last year's general election.
According
to The Sunday Times, Mr Yeo said the ruling People's Action Party's share of
60.1 per cent of votes showed that many had lost faith in the Government and
that was not a good thing.
"When
a country is divided, many problems will arise," he said. He also called
for Singaporeans to link their hearts together and broaden their minds.
The
former foreign minister said both the politicians in opposition parties and
those within the Government make must an effort to work together, citing his
former grassroots leader Dr Ang Yong Guan as an example.
Dr Ang
joined the Singapore Democratic Party last year after chairing the Punggol
Community Club management committee for a long time. Dr Yeo said although Dr
Ang had joined the opposition, it was still possible for them to work together.
The
dinner was organised by Aljunied GRC's Bedok Reservoir-Punggol ward to thank Mr
Yeo for his 23 years of service as their adviser.
He had
stepped down on Jan 1 and was succeeded by grassroots veteran Anthony Loh.
People's
Association special adviser Lim Boon Heng was among the 1,000 residents and
grassroots volunteers who attended the dinner.
There
were tributes from grassroots leaders during the dinner and performances from
residents.
Mr Yeo
was the first of the five defeated PAP candidates in Aljunied GRC to step down
as grassroots adviser and branch chairman.
The
Sunday Times said the announcements of the retirement of two others, Ms Lim
Hwee Hua and Mdm Cynthia Phua are impending.
