Vietnam - College faces enrollment ban over head’s wrongdoings

A Ho Chi Minh City-based technical junior college will likely be banned from enrolling students for the forthcoming school year starting in September, following its president’s various wrongdoings.

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training will ask the Ministry of Education and Training to forbid Saigon College of Economics and Technology (SAIMETE) from recruiting new enrollees until it manages to rectify the wrongdoings, improve its teaching facilities, consolidate administration, and ensure adequate interests for students, department director Pham Ngoc Thanh told local media Tuesday.

The president, Pham Pho, was earlier found opening unaccredited courses without consulting the management board, setting up new branches without permission, over-enrolling students, and appointing unqualified personnel.

Specifically, many accused Pho had the school enroll more than twice the number of students allowed by the education ministry in 2008.

For several years, he has let SAIMETE offer unlicensed classes on information technology, environment, hospitality, and finance and banking.

What’s more, many SAIMETE administrators had accused Pho of other misconduct, which was later confirmed by local authorities, related to the organization of the school’s management board, its joint programs, and the construction of a facility in Thu Duc District.

He is also suspected of faking thousands of English certificates usually conferred by the education ministry and selling them to students.
