Vietnam - Hanoi seizes large quantity of fake weight-loss drug

A joint team of environmental police and market management officers in Hanoi has seized 12 cartons containing jars of fake Lishou weight-loss drug.

Following a tip-off, the team inspected and detained the fake goods at a warehouse at 647 Kim Ma Street, Ba Dinh District yesterday night.

Inside the 12 cartons were nearly 2,000 jars (40 500 mg tablets per jar) of Lishou, a Chinese brand for weight-loss drug. The fake food had been carried to the storage by a man named Pham Hong Pho.

Pho told the inspectors that he had been hired to transported the goods by a woman named Tran Thi Thanh Ly in Ho Chi Minh City.

The team also found a lot of beauty care products without origin, including 3X Slimming Power, and a large quantity of anti-faking stamps issued by the Criminal Science Institute under the Ministry of Public Security.

After examination, the inspectors concluded all the stamps were fake, too.

The packaging of Lishou jars shows that the importer and distributor is Phu Hai Medical Equipment Joint Stock Company located in Dong Da District, Hanoi.

The company later told the team that it has stopped importing and distributing Lishou on since September 5, 2011 after the Health Ministry ordered a recall of the product from the market since it was found to contain an excessive amount of sibutramine (8-10 mg per tablet), which is harmful to human health.

The total value of the fake goods was estimated at about VND1.1 billion (US$52,800), said Lieutenant Colonel Pham Giang Son, from the Hanoi environmental police.

Son said the team was expanding their investigation and that all the seized goods would be destroyed.
