VietNamNet Bridge – When the deadline for using agricultural land
comes, farmers will be allowed to continue using land, stated the Government
Office’s Chair at a press conference yesterday.

In accordance with the Land Law 2003, farmers are allocated with land
for 20 years for farming, aquaculture and for 50 years for planting forest and
perennials. After that, they will have to return the land to the State for
re-allocation.
However, Chairman of the Government’s Office - Vu Duc Dam - told a
press conference on March 6 that farmers who obey the law in using land and
still want to use land will be permitted to continue using it.
Dam also said that if the law is amended, land would not be revoked for
re-allocation.
The official said that the Government would assign the Ministry of
Natural Resources and Environment and provincial authorities to tell people
about the news so farmers would feel secure in using land.
Dam said that the government had asked local governments and relevant
agencies to review the implementation of the Land Law. The Central Party
Committee is discussing this issue, Dam added.
“The government clearly understands the significance of land to
Vietnamese people. Therefore, though the Land Law is under review, the
guideline is not revoking and reallocating land,” Dam stressed.
The message was delivered at the time that many people asked to amend
the Land Law, especially after the land withdrawal case in Tien Lang district
of the northern port city of Hai Phong.
Earlier, former Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment
Dang Hung Vo said that the biggest problem of the current Land Law is the
land-use duration. The best way is abolishing the duration.
Former Minister of Justice Nguyen Dinh Loc also said that the Tien Lang
case is a big lesson on land-related policies. According to a source from the
Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, the ministry will organize a
meeting today, March 7, to make public information on land management.
