Vietnam - Ultrabooks fall into disgrace in Vietnam

VietNamNet Bridge – Ultrabook manufacturers once hoped that their products would create a new trend for the post-PC era. However, to date, it remains ineffective testing dose in the Vietnamese market

Notebooks still more favored than Ultrabook

First appeared in 2009, the versions of portable computers which were thin, light with moderate configuration, then still did not have the name “ultrabook”. At that moment, they were just the rivals of Apple’s Macbook Air in the design.

With Dell Adamo, Adamo XPS and HP Envy Voodoo 133, Vietnamese users got used more familiar to these new products. However, there were only the products, imported through an official channels, available on the market, because of the latent errors and the difficulties to use warranty services.

Quang Huy, the owner of a hi-tech product shop, recalled that the demand was very low. “I imported some Dell Adamo XPS to the orders of some clients, and imported one black Envy Voodoo 133. But later I had to bargain it away and incurred the loss of ten million dong,” he said.

The “Ultrabook trend” boomed in 2010 with the joining of Intel which launched the Core i series, replacing the MTXT series which used the Core Solo chipset. Then Samsung, Asus and Acer joined the market. Recently, HP’s models with Ultrabook style have also put on the shelves.

As more products have hit the market, the prices of Ultrabooks have been decreasing significantly. However, despite the sale price decreases, better configuration and better designs, Ultrabooks still find it hard to find buyers in Vietnam.

Minh Huyen, a student of the Hanoi University for Foreign Trade, said that she heard about Ultrabook series with powerful configuration which are compact and suitable to women.

“However, I would rather to choose normal MTXT series. Though they are bigger and heavier, they can be bought at 10 million dong only instead of 20 million dong,” Huyen said.

Quoc Toan, an officer of an information technology product distribution chain, also said that the demand for Ultrabook is weak, because the products remain still unfamiliar to consumers.

In 2011, the market welcomed some new products, including Samsung S9, Acer Aspire S3 and Asus Zenbook. However, the manufacturers did not focus their marketing campaigns on these products. Meanwhile, very few people showed interests in the products.

“We have been selling only one or two Ultrabooks a week so far this year,” Toan said.

With very high prices of between 19.9 million dong and 30 million dong, Utrabooks have not become popular in Vietnam. A report released by a well known computer distributor in Vietnam showed that only one product in every 12.1 products sold by the distributor is Ultrabook.

Having realized that the market demand is weak, MTXT brands in the Vietnamese market still keep hesitant to launch new Ultrabook models or the expensive products with max option configuration.

What do Vietnamese people choose?

The biggest rival of Ultrabook series now is Apple Macbook Air. With many loyal clients, Macbook Air series still have been selling well.

Thanh Hai, a customer, who is going to buy Macbook Air, said that with the prices around 20 million dong, Macbook Air proves to be suitable to office workers. The operation system MAC OS X is a little different from Windows, but it is easy to get familiar with it. Meanwhile, users would not have to worry about virus, the biggest problem for computer users.

Acer Aspire S3 seems to be the cheapest among the products available on the market, while Asus Zenbook UX31 has the highest price. Meanwhile, Samsung Series 9 has been removed from the shelves, while only second hand products are available priced at 17 million dong. In the past, a brand new product was sold at 30 million dong. Meanwhile, the brand has not launched any new Ultrabook models.
