The Hanoitimes - Vietnam’s
two biggest cities, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City increased in Provincial
Competitiveness Index (PCI) in 2011 with 58.28 points and 61.93 points,
respectively, according to Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI).
Last year, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City ranked 36 and 20 out of 63 cities
and provinces in terms of PCI.
Lao Cai Province ranked first with 73.53 points, followed by Bac Ninh
Province with 67.27 points. Two Southern provinces of Long An and Dong Thap
shares the 3rd and 4th positions, respectively.
Despite difficulties in the economy, provinces and cities’ quality of management
in 2011 has been improved. The average points of each province in 2011 are
59.15, higher than in 2010 and 2009.
The 2011 PCI showed the gap of competitiveness between provinces has
been narrowed, revealed the representative of VCCI.
The evaluation of PCI is an effective tool for local authorities to
assist businesses, asserted the US Ambassador to Vietnam David B.Shear. A
number of cities and provinces have positively changed its positions in the
index in 2011, he added.
The 2011 PCI was carried out by VCCI in coordination with the US
Chamber of Commerce and the European Union Chamber of Commerce.
