VietNamNet Bridge – While private primary and secondary schools have been flourishing, private high schools in Hanoi have been narrowed significantly in scale.
Competing with special services
Luong The Vinh High School has been known as a prestigious private school in Hanoi. The school always has high percentages of students passing the university entrance exams every year. Meanwhile, it also sets very high required marks on secondary school graduates who want to study at the school. In order to obtain a seat at the school, parents have to queue up in front of the school very early in the morning to buy application forms.
Dinh Tien Hoang High School is not famous for its high learning achievements, but it is still a well known brand. The way the school is following is really special: it receives a lot of naughty students. All the students refused by other schools would be welcomed at Dinh Tien Hoang School.
The headmasters of the schools have both said that it is necessary to define the student targets--to draw up reasonable policies to attract students, emphasizing that this is a vital factor in the development of a school.
According to Professor Van Nhu Cuong, Headmaster of Luong The Vinh School, two questions need to be answered: “Whom do we need?” and “Who need us?”
And the answer is: “If we do exactly the same things that state owned schools are doing, no one would need us. But, if we can provide advanced education services, a lot of people would need us.”
Private schools call for help
However, educators said that it is not easy for schools to find the special ways for themselves. Therefore, they believe that the state should give support to help private schools develop and cement their firm positions in the society. The State should apply the policies with which students do not feel the discriminatory treatment between state owned and private schools.
Private schools deserve the support, because they have been making big contribution to the education development in the last many years.
State owned schools in the city only can satisfy the demand of ¾ of secondary school graduates. If Vietnam had not private schools, the other ¼ of secondary school graduates would be able to continue their study. If so, this would be the big unfortunate things for families and the big threat to the society’s security.
The existence of private schools not only helps the State heighten the intellectual standards of people, reduce the social evils, but also help reduce the state budget’s spending.
Meanwhile, despite the great contribution, private schools have not got any support from the State. Private school students now have to bear all kinds of expenses, which is really unfair to them.
Nguyen Thu Nga, Headmaster of the Hong Ha High School in Hai Ba Trung district, said that the State pays 4 million dong for every student a year. Meanwhile, all kinds of expenses at private schools have been put on students’ shoulders. Nga said that the State should give support at a certain level in order to ease the burden on schools and students.
Do Van Man, Headmaster of the An Duong Vuong High School in Hai Ba Trung district, pointed out that the student sin rural areas are the biggest sufferers from the discriminatory treatment.
“The students from well off families usually go to state owned schools, where they have to pay low tuitions. Meanwhile, the students from poor families usually do not have much time to spend on learning and have to go to private schools, where the tuitions are high. Therefore, the poor students would get poorer,” he explains.
