PROMINENT business
figures and government officials gathered at a cocktail reception hosted by
Eurocham Cambodia at the Raffles Hotel Le Royal Phnom Penh last night for a
networking session in conjunction with the second ASEAN-EU Business Summit
(AEBS), which kicks off today.
Present at the launch was Senior Minister Cham Prasidh, the Minister of
Commerce and chair of the ASEAN Economic Ministers of Cambodia.
Today's business summit will see Okhna Kith Meng, president of the
Cambodia Chamber of Commerce, Dominique Catry, chairman of Eurocham Cambodia
and Stefano Poli, EU-ASEAN Business Council (EABC) kick off the event.
Karel De Gucht, the European Union Commissioner for Trade, and Surin
Pitsuwan, the Secretary-General of ASEAN, is also scheduled to give welcoming
remarks. This will be followed by an opening address by Samdech Decho Hun Sen,
the prime minister of the Cambodia.
The first part of the summit today will start with an open dialogue
session between business leaders on promoting EU-ASEAN business partnerships
based on sustainable trade and investment. This session is aimed to encourage
discussion on the opportunities offered by opening up markets, trade
liberalisation and enhanced integration both globally and regionally amongst
companies from ASEAN and the EU.
Currently, ASEAN represents the EU's third largest trading partner
outside Europe (after the United States and China) with more than €206 billion
of trade in goods and services in 2011. The EU is ASEAN's second largest
trading partner after China, accounting for 11 per cent of ASEAN trade.
The business summit will also see four sector-specific dialogues.
According to the programme, this session is aimed at bringing the "policy
dimension of trade and investment into business perspectives from both sides
with a view to identifying points of convergence and divergence for an enhanced
networking between ASEAN and the EU". The four categories are
agri-business; infrastructure and connectivity; manufacturing and services.
