Brunei - Meeting held to boost Brunei-China ties

THE China-ASEAN Secretariat is seeking to further enhance and foster mutual cooperation with Brunei's business and political circles.

This was made known by the China-ASEAN Secretariat delegation yesterday during a joint working meeting with several key members of the business community held at the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources, in conjunction with the ninth China-ASEAN Expo (CAEXPO) 2012.

According to the delegation leader, Huang Yuan, vice secretary general of the China-ASEAN Expo Secretariat, China is keen on improving existing trade relations and exploring potential business opportunities with ASEAN member countries, hopefully by fostering mutual cooperation among business and political communities of China and ASEAN-member countries.

With CAEXPO being among the many successful platforms for China-ASEAN cooperation, the delegation provided a more insightful invitation for Brunei's business community by pointing out China's definitive requirements for supply, demand and investment options.

The discussion started off with the China-ASEAN secretariat requesting for Brunei's participation this year to be more precise in what they seek to establish through trade and investment opportunities in China.

A request was also made by the delegation for Brunei to assist in promoting a better understanding of their economic diversification and development needs, and for Brunei's representation at the Cities of Charm Pavilion to be more image-oriented.

The ninth CAEXPO will provide various opportunities for Brunei's business community, said Huang Yuan, especially with the Direct Business Matching programme, which the secretariat will help to facilitate.

The only requirement needed is that interested Brunei parties must provide their complete portfolio and specify their exact needs to the secretariat in advance to enable a proper match-ups with potential business and economic partnerships.

The portfolio, along with their preferred industrial partner, will enable the secretariat to also market and promote them to their business counterparts in China, said Huang Yuan.

The trade exhibit, which is scheduled for September 21-25 in Nanning, China this year, will focus on scientific and technological cooperation, she added.

This year's trade expo will feature the China-ASEAN Science and Technology Ministers Conference to highlight the event together with its five regular pavilions of Commodity Trade, Investment Cooperation, Advanced Technology, Trade in Services and Cities of Charm.

Another focus this year, said Huang Yuan, will be on investment cooperation.

China will look to invest in ASEAN industrial parks in a bid to assist member countries with their economic development and growth, said Huang Yuan, noting that the move would enable China to foster and establish closer trade relations with ASEAN member countries. The vice secretary general added that CAEXPO this year will provide more effective investment cooperation programmes for ASEAN member countries to help them attract investors from the world's second largest economy.

The programme, entitled "Invest in ASEAN: Promotion conference for ASEAN Industrial Parks", is specially designed as part of CAEXPO 2012 to feature the first ever overall image display of ASEAN industrial parks and investment promotion conferences.

As Chinese investors are looking for investment opportunities, the China-ASEAN secretariat will be assisting in gathering all ASEAN industrial parks for them to explore and evaluate their economic potential.

Representing Brunei during the meeting were several key members of the business community in Brunei, such as the President of the Brunei-China Friendship Association, members of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce, Brunei Freight Forwarders Association and others.
