Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen announced
yesterday an improvement in the diplomatic and economic relations between
Cambodia and Thailand.
"Cambodia
wanted peace, friendship, cooperation and development along the borders with
its neighbours," he told a road inauguration ceremony in Siem Reap
province.
"It
achieved this with Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand. Unfortunately, these goals were
destroyed along the Cambodian-Thai border in 2008. The new government led by
the Pheu Thai Party has been trying to restore the situation," he added.
"In
recent days, I have talked with Thai Prime Minster Yingluck about increasing
business at the border between the two countries. I also told her that some
crossings at the Cambodian-Thai border were open for business only two or three
days a week and asked if more days were possible.
"Exchanging
goods is better than exchanging fire. We exchanged fire once in early February
2011 near Preah Vihear temple and it happened again near Ta Moan and Ta Krobei
temples after Khmer New Year, harming the people of both countries. Now,
however, the situation improved. People can exchange goods at the border."
