KEMBANGAN: Affordability gives Malaysia
an edge in health tourism compared to developed countries, said Tourism
Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen.
She
said medical tourism in Malaysia hit record levels of growth last year.
“Receipts
from 578,403 foreign patients totalled RM509.77mil.
“The
amount is well above the initial projection of RM431mil, clearly demonstrating
that Malaysia has an enormous potential in health tourism,” said Dr Ng at the
launch of Mines Wellness Hotel here yesterday.
The
text of her speech was read by ministry deputy secretary-general Dr Junaida Lee
Abdullah.
Dr Ng
said there were eight factors that made Malaysia an attractive destination for
health tourism:
>
Beautiful location;
> State-of-the-art
facilities;
>
Accreditation;
>
Highly qualified professionals;
>
Excellent infrastructure;
>
Competitive medical costs;
>
Ease of entry; and
>
Convenience and speed.
“I am
optimistic our opportunities for tourism will increase in a softening global
economy as tourists look for alternative and affordable solutions for wellness
and healthcare while medical costs continue to climb in developed countries,”
she said.
Formerly
known as Palace Beach and Spa, the Mines Wellness Hotel recently underwent a
RM1.3mil refurbishment and has been repositioned as a wellness resort.
The
hotel recently clinched the Asean Green Hotel Recognition Award 2012, which
recognises hotels for practising environmentally-friendly principles and energy
conservation measures.
