SINGAPORE:
Medical researchers are one step closer
to having a home of their own when the Academia is ready in 2013.
When
ready, one of their priorities will be to research on diseases relevant to the
region. These include diabetes and cardiovascular and infectious diseases.
The
research will be conducted under the Academic Clinic Programs (ACPs) which is a
collaboration between Singhealth and Duke-NUS to improve patient care and
treatment outcomes.
To
date, ACPs for medicine, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, surgery,
neuroscience and ophthalmology have been established. Other key specialities
like family medicine and radiology will be rolled out by the end of this year.
The
ACPs bring together all specialists in a particular discipline from various
institutions. This allows the sharing of ideas and resources to progress
clinical care, education and research.
Duke-NUS
Graduate Medical School's Dean, Professor Ranga Krishnan, said: "Viruses
cross over from animals to humans in Asia and Singapore airport serves as a junction
for a lot of viruses to come and go, so it is critical that you have an
infectious disease programme in Singapore.
"And
we're interested in neuroscience because brain diseases, stroke, psychiatric
problems and dementia are all becoming all common in Asia as people are getting
older."
The
research priorities were announced at the topping up ceremony of the Academia
graced by Health Minister Gan Kim Yong.
The new
13-storey twin tower facility at the Singapore General Hospital (SGH) campus
will house SingHealth's research, education and training facilities.
Built
at a cost of S$360 million, it will also house SGH's pathology services.
The
Academia will encourage team-based learning for healthcare professionals in
simulated labs to hone their lifesupport, nursing and surgical skills.
Education labs within the facility will also be test beds for the development
of new curriculum and teaching methodology using latest technology.
