Singapore - Men willing to risk jail for having sex with minors

When it comes to prostitutes, young equals fresh.

At least that's the impression among men who pay for sex.

And to some of them, young girls also mean cleaner and safer sex.

But they are deluded, said a 50-year-old mamasan with a decade's experience in the nightclub business.

These men prefer girls who are under 20 years old, said Josephine (not her real name).

These younger women often command premium prices, but she said some men don't mind even if it sometimes means having to pay double for them.

"The customers believe that young girls are fresh in the business and would not have slept with as many men," Josephine said.

"They think that this means they have a lower chance of contracting diseases from these girls.

"But if every man thinks this way, the younger women would be the ones with plenty of business.

"What would be so clean and fresh about them any more?" she asked.

Even so, men often find the lure of bedding young women too hard to resist.

Josephine claimed she has had customers telling her that they would even risk having sex with a minor.

Anyone convicted of paying for sex with a prostitute who is below 18 years of age can be jailed up to seven years and fined.

Josephine said she is aware of this, which is why she turns away girls below that age when they approach her about working as KTV hostesses.

As with the social escort agencies, she has also seen underage girls, both local and foreigners, showing up to look for jobs.

Josephine said that two out of 10 women who seek work with her are below 20.

She said: "I would tell those who are under 18 to go elsewhere. We are a licensed operator and we will not take such risks.

"I told the girls that we could both end up in jail. And they would leave. They don't beg me to give them a job because they know that it is illegal.

"They came knowing what they would be getting themselves into, even though they have not reached the legal age."

Asked where the minors go after they are turned away, Josephine said: "I don't know. I heard some become freelancers working for smaller clubs or solicit on their own."

She said she was surprised to learn that some of the local girls come from good family backgrounds.

"They work for the money to buy designer handbags, unlike the foreigners who work to support their families back home” said Josephine.

"I have had some young hostesses from other countries who work to pay for their school fees here."

Price tag

As for hostesses in her nightclub, every woman has a price tag, she said.

It can easily cost more than $1,000 to take the young and beautiful ones out.

"Whether they have sex outside the club, I do not know," said Josephine, adding that she has no control over what they do once they are out of the club.

Josephine said that most girls know that they have to have sex with customers if they want to earn more money.

"But the choice is theirs and nobody would be forced into having sex with customers if they are unwilling to," she said.

"Most hostesses know what they are getting themselves into."
