Vietnam - High schools may go nuclear

HA NOI — Basic knowledge of atomic energy and nuclear power should be included in the high school curriculum to heighten public awareness on the issue, according to the Ministry of Science and Technology.

It is part of a draft project to disseminate the necessity and safety of nuclear power in the period of 2012-20 to back the national program of nuclear power development.

Vietnam has taken initiation steps towards developing this kind of power with its Ninh Thuan nuclear power project. In 2010, the Government also approved Planning Orientation on Nuclear Power Development in Vietnam.

Experts at a meeting held by the ministry yesterday agreed that the support and unanimity of society were among the decisive factors in the success of the nuclear development program. To achieve this, communication activities were indispensable.

However, these activities have not yet officially started, said Deputy Minister Le Dinh Tien.

"It's time young generations were taught about nuclear power," he said, adding that education would also provide a future workforce for the field.

Under the draft project, education on nuclear power would be first implemented in Ha Noi, HCM City and Ninh Thuan Province in the next three years before being expanded to other provinces and cities in the period 2015-20.

The teaching program on nuclear power must be designed in detail appropriate for students of different levels, a representative from the Ministry of Education and Training's High-School Department said.

Training should be provided to State officials to be well aware of nuclear power safety, said Le Viet Cuong from the Ministry of Industry and Trade's Department of Science and Technology.

He said Vietnam should enhance international cooperation in the field and gain experience from other countries to ensure nuclear power safety during the implementation process.

In addition, public relation centers would be established in Ha Noi and Ninh Thuan Provinces.

The cost of implementing the communication/education project was estimated at VND300 billion (US$14.3 million).
