Bridge – Three women died when delivering
birth at hospitals in Bac Ninh, Hung Yen and Quang Ngai province during last
weekend. The Ministry of Health asked the three provincial departments of
health to investigate these cases.
Mr.
Tran Quy Tuong, Vice Chief of the Examination and Treatment Department, says
that if local departments of health cannot solve the cases, the Ministry of
Health will set up an expertise council to examine these deaths.
Local
departments of health are going to send forensic results of these cases to the
Health Ministry in the next few days.
In the
first case, a 23-year-old expecting woman was brought to the Quang Ngai
Province Polyclinic on the evening of April 18, when her water bag broke and
she began labor, at the 37th week of the gestation period. She began having
trouble in breathing at noon of April 19. She was transferred to the operating
room. However, the woman died the next morning. Her son is now in critical
condition.
The
same day, Ms. Hanh, 31, died after giving birth to a son of 4kg at the Hung Yen
Polyclinic. The baby also died after that.
In Bac
Ninh, an expectant mother named Loan, 34, was brought to the Kinh Bac
Polyclinic at 8am of April 20. At 0.30am of April 21, she turned pale, foamed
and was brought to the emergency ward. However, the mother and her baby died
after 30 minutes. This was her third child.
In all
three cases, families of expectant mothers asked doctors to perform cesareans
because these women were not very healthy. However, doctors refused, saying
that these women were healthy and could “give birth anytime.”
On the
morning of April 22, hundreds of people brought the coffin and portrait of the
dead expectant mother, named Loan, to the Kinh Bac Polyclinic and asked the
hospital to investigate the case. Most of doctors and nurses had to leave the
hospital to avoid assaults.
