Malaysia confident of trade growth despite
Global slowing
Malaysia
has confidence in trade growth amid global economic slowdown, as domestic and
external demand remains strong and trade within ASEAN and with China keeps
increasing, Malaysian International Trade and Industry Minister Mustapa Mohamed
said Thursday.
“The
trade growth rate remains at 5 percent, within our expectations,” he told a
press conference after opening the Trade Financing for SME Exporters Seminar.
The
gross trade grew by 6.5% in Q-1, while export and import expanded by 8.7 and
10.9% respectively.
Mustapa
said the growth was supported by greater domestic activities under the
government’s Economic Transformation Program.
“Others
than that, the reasons which contributed to the trade volume increase included
the huge and strong demand from major markets within ASEAN, plus a pick-up in
consumer demand in the United States and China.”
