KUALA
LUMPUR - Malaysian Prime Minister Najib
Razak on Friday laid out seven principles to guide the people in making their
assessment and consideration for the coming 13th General Election (GE).
Najib,
who is also UMNO president, said the principles were formulated based on the
almost seven decades of UMNO's contributions to the country.
"I
want to lay out seven principles which can help us to make an assessment and
consideration. Firstly, between the Barisan Nasional (BN) and the opposition,
which has the leadership that is trustworthy and keeps its promises? Who does
everything? Barisan Nasional!"
"Besides
that, of the 22 promises made by the opposition...most of them are not
fulfilled in Selangor. Who failed to manage the water issue. There is a whole
lot more where they failed.
"Secondly,
we have to determine that tomorrow will be better than today. Between BN and
the opposition, who can assure that Malaysians will be much better off tomorrow
than today," he said at UMNO's 66th anniversary celebration at the Bukit
Jalil National Stadium in Kuala Lumpur on Friday night.
Najib
also threw a challenge to the opposition to assemble at a stadium as shown by
UMNO if it really wanted to flex its muscles.
"We
assembled in this stadium in peace. We assembled in this stadium in an orderly
manner. We assembled in this stadium because UMNO respect the nation's law.
"We
do not need many policemen around. The policemen looked cheerful. They are
smiling. They are not tensed up, we are also not tensed up.
"If
UMNO can assembled in a stadium, why can't other parties do it?" he said,
referring to the Merdeka Stadium offered by the authorities to the opposition
for the April 28 rally.
Najib
said the government made the offer in order to maintain peace and security but
it was rejected on the ground that it was too late.
"Even
though they have three more days left. Let me tell you, they rejected the
Merdeka Stadium for no other reason. Because they wanted to plough (into the
police barricade), they wanted to quarrel, they wanted to kick the police.
"If
there was no altercation, there would be no stories on CNN, Al-Jazeera, the
BBC. This is the real objective. They wanted to show that the government and
the authorities are ruthless. They do not respect the laws," he said.
On his
part, Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin reminded UMNO members that the
coming General Election would not only put political power on the line, but
also the struggle and fate of the nation.
As
such, he urged UMNO members to get ready and be prepared for the GE.
"We
have to prepare a lineup of UMNO fighters who really work hard and are capable
of winning the people's hearts. This is the moment and time UMNO will face its
most dreadful test," he said.
Muhyiddin,
who is also the UMNO deputy president, also warned the enemies of UMNO not to
upset the unity and harmony that had been built and not to spread information
and ideologies that could affect the people's faith.
"Don't
allow them to damage our way of life which is ethical and moral. Do not, in any
way, consent and allow the people to be polluted with deviationist teachings
and ideologies," he added.
A red
wave of cheering UMNO members reverberated the stadium as the party celebrated
its anniversary. The red wave built up since mid-day before the crowd swelled
to some 100,000 by the time Najib and his wife arrived at the stadium.
The
occasion was also graced by former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad and his
wife.
UMNO
members were ferried to the stadium by about 2,800 buses from around the
country.
