Vietnam - Power pricing

Ministries of industry and trade and finance do not plan to increase electricity price at the present moment, the local newswire Vnmedia reported citing Dinh The Phuc, deputy head of Electricity Regulatory Authority of Vietnam, as saying at the monthly regular press conference held on April 2 by Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT).

Phuc said that to ensure social security, the government as well as MoIT and Ministry of Finance (MoF) do not have policy to hike electricity price at the present.

According to Phuc, the increase of electricity prices under the market mechanism has been approved previously, but electricity prices must be harmonised to ensure that businesses can invest and ensure social security.

Therefore, the electricity price will be raised at an appropriate time, Phuc affirmed.

Regarding the electricity supply in this summer, Phuc also said that according to the ministry's balance, the electricity supply for socio-economic development will be ensured in the near future. However, during too hot days, high temperature may cause the partial outage situation of electricity supply in some locations due to power overload.

"In general, electricity supply will still be ensured for social demand in the future" Phuc reaffirmed.

As reported by MoIT, in April, electricity production output was estimated at 9.2 billion kWh, down 3.7 percent from March and rising 15.4 percent over April 2011.

Totally in Jan-April period, the electricity production output was estimated at 35.1 billion kWh, rising 14.5 percent on year.
