Bridge – Air temperatures in Northern
Vietnam reached 43 degrees Celsius at 1pm on May Day, affecting the lives of
many locals.
Temperature
was measured at 41.1 degrees Celsius inside some meteorological tents in the
northern province of Ninh Binh and the central province of Nghe An. The figure
for such provinces as Son La, Hoa Binh, and Thanh Hoa were about 40.5 degrees
Celsius. In central Hanoi, it was 38.5 degrees Celsius.
The
temperature in reality would be 3 or 4 degrees higher if we allow for
variables, said Vu Anh Tuan, an official from the national hydro-meteorological
forecast centre.
Many
local people have sought ways to escape extreme heat.
In
Hanoi, a great number of people rushed to supermarkets, cinemas, indoor
recreation centres, and green parks to avoid the hot weather. The hypermarket
Big C Thang Long was packed with visitors from 9am. The ‘escapees’ included
children and their parents. Students also visited the cinema, and ate inside
during the daytime. Meanwhile, people from other provinces who came to Hanoi
for April 30 and May Day celebrations tended to gather in big parks.
Farmers
in Nghe An province did not go to their grain fields until late in the
afternoon.
“We are
afraid of sunstroke. We only go there in late afternoon to kill weeds and spray
pesticides,” said a local farmer.
Most of
road users in Nghe An’s Do Luong wore face masks and sunglasses.
Some
popular beaches in Nghe An such as Cua Lo, Xuan Thanh, and Thien Cam were full
of holidaymakers. Although most appeared
on the beach only in early morning or late afternoon.
The
central province of Quang Tri, which used to be a hot spot for fighting during
the Vietnam War, was nearly scorched by the sun and hot winds from Laos.
In Dong
Ha City, local people sought to evade heat by sleeping or drinking along the
Hieu river.
Some
sellers of ‘bun’ (a type of noodle) and vegetables complained that weather
spoiled many of their products.
The
same situation also occurred in the former imperial city of Hue.
This
hot spell has also led to a surge in the number of hospitalized children in
Thanh Hoa province due to respiratory or digestive diseases.
In
response to the heat, many Thanh Hoa residents
sheltered in forests or near waterfall.
