KUALA
LUMPUR, June 16 (Bernama) -- Tourism
Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen believes the two giant pandas loaned by China
to Malaysia will be a great tourism product.
She
said the pandas would be a great attraction for Malaysia's tourism industry,
especially for the "Cuti-Cuti Satu Malaysia" programme with many
people coming to see the real life pandas.
"I
expect an influx of tourists from other countries, especially Singapore and Indonesia
to see the pandas in Malaysia.
"There
is a long queue; many countries such as Asean countries want pandas, but China
is very selective on who they lend their pandas to. I believe the loan of the
two pandas to us signifies the good relations between Malaysia and China."
Dr Ng
told this to reporters after the launching of the "Eighth Malaysia
Festival of the Mind" by the Malaysia Mental Literacy Movement (MMLM) at
the Tunku Abdul Rahman College (TARC) main campus, here, today.
On
caring for the pandas, she said this would be by the Environment and National
Resources Ministry in collaboration with specialists from China.
"All
aspects of taking care of the pandas are not only for their comfort but
hopefully, they can produce babies," she said.
On
Thursday, China decided to lend two pandas to Malaysia to further enhance the
38-year-old diplomatic ties between the two countries. The loan request was
made by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao
during his visit to Nanning in April.
On the
festival, Dr Ng said it helped in the creation of talents, especially among
young minds and in enhancing individuals' creativity and innovativeness.
Through
the festival, the public have the rare opportunity to gain practical exposure
on brain enrichment, mind mapping and memory enhancement techniques from the
mind experts.
