MANILA, Philippines --- The World Health Organization (WHO) on Saturday called on governments to find innovative ways to improve regional cooperation on the fight against dengue.

WHO made the call during the celebration of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) dengue day last week.

The ASEAN member states of Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, the Lao People's Democratic Republic, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam and Singapore held simultaneous activities to raise awareness for the prevention and control of dengue.

Records from WHO said dengue remains a serious public health threat with 75 percent of the global disease burden occurring in the Asia-Pacific region.

Dengue is transmitted through the bite of Aedes Aegypti that may be infected with the four strains of dengue – dengue 1, 2, 3, and 4.

"Worldwide dengue claims about 20,000 deaths each year,” WHO said in a statement.
