Regarding Ray Bloom's letter in yesterday's
''PostBag'', ''Patronage system old hat'', there is no question that those with
political connections receive preferential treatment in Thai society for all
ranges of jobs.
Of
course, this is an explicit form of discrimination in which those without the
means or political connections to compete for available jobs operate at an
extreme disadvantage.
But
what about those discriminated against because of age, sex or national
identity? I am continually amazed when looking at the employment pages in local
newspapers to read about the plethora of jobs advertised limited to those of a
certain age, sex or national identity. Most routinely discriminated against
seem to be people over the age of 35.
Laws in
Europe and the United States have long prevented this form of blatant job
discrimination, yet in six years in Thailand I have never read of any outrage
or concern over this form of preferential job treatment and I wonder why that
is.
